I recently attempted to update the BIOS on my HP [Laptop Model] by downloading the official BIOS update from the HP website. However, after initiating the update, my laptop’s screen went black, although the fans and other components seemed to continue running. I waited for about two hours, but nothing changed.
I then tried several troubleshooting steps:
Forced a shutdown by holding the power button – no success.
Removed the CMOS battery for 20 minutes to reset the BIOS – no change.
Currently, my laptop turns on (fans are running), but the screen remains black with no response. Could you please advise on how to restore my BIOS?

Hi @vlad105
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're facing a black screen issue after attempting a BIOS update on your HP laptop. If the screen remains black even though the fans and other components are running, it suggests that the BIOS update may have caused a malfunction, possibly corrupting the BIOS or preventing it from initializing properly.
Here are some steps to try to restore or recover the BIOS:
1. Perform a Hard Reset
- Unplug all external devices from the laptop (USB drives, external monitors, etc.).
- Shut down the laptop and unplug the power adapter.
- Remove the battery (if it’s removable) and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reinsert the battery, plug in the power adapter, and try turning the laptop back on.
2. HP BIOS Recovery (Using a Key Combination)
Some HP laptops have a BIOS recovery feature that you can use to restore or reset the BIOS if it becomes corrupted. Here's how to try this:
- Turn off the laptop completely.
- Press and hold the Windows + B keys (or Windows + V on some models) on the laptop's keyboard.
- While holding the keys, press and hold the power button for about 3-5 seconds (do not release the Windows + B keys yet).
- After a few moments, release the power button, but continue holding the Windows + B keys.
- The laptop should attempt to recover the BIOS and show a recovery screen or the BIOS recovery process will start (you may see a progress bar or a message like "System Recovery" or "BIOS Recovery").
If this works, the BIOS should restore itself, and the system will reboot normally.
3. Create a BIOS Recovery USB Drive
If the above method doesn’t work, you may need to create a BIOS recovery USB drive on a different computer (since your laptop screen is black and unresponsive). Here's how to do that:
- Download the Correct BIOS Version for your laptop from the HP support website. Be sure to download the version that corresponds to your exact laptop model.
- Create a Bootable USB Drive:
- On a working computer, format a USB drive to FAT32 and download the BIOS recovery file from HP.
- Place the downloaded BIOS file onto the USB drive.
- Plug the USB Drive into Your Laptop.
- On your laptop, turn off the power, then press and hold the Windows + B keys (or Windows + V).
- While holding the keys, press the power button. This should trigger the laptop to attempt a BIOS recovery from the USB stick.
