HP Pavillion notebook 2015 TB
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

**I’m not sure which windows it is on currently eg. 32bit 64bit etc, all I know is it’s on windows 10**Hi I have a 2015 HP pavillion notebook 1Tb and it’s stuck in automatic repair, it’s been a few months now. I can access the system diagnostics and I tested all the components and everything passed except the hard drive. I have nothing useful on the current hard drive anyway, so could I just buy a new hard drive, install it and turn the laptop on? Would that fix the automatic repair loop? Also this laptop is a 1tb, 5V 700mA DC, SATA 6.0Gb/s, 5400rpm hard drive. Do I have to buy the exact same hard drive or can it be a smaller hard drive e.g. 500gb? Please can someone help me out

If the diagnostics say the hard drive has failed, then it needs to be replaced.  It would be advantageous to see the old drive and then replace it with a similar drive or a SSD.  It does not have to be exactly the same as the old drive but has to use the SATA and power and fit in the old drive's mounting.   Most laptops use similar drives, IE - 2.5" with SATA and power connections.

Another thing will be reinstalling Windows 10 and any other software that was useful to you.  At that time, you will need to decide whether to use Windows 10 32bit or 64bit.

If you post the complete model number of the laptop it would be helpful so as to give better help.

Hi the model number 15-p261sa

The spec page indicates that model to have a 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA drive.  The manual indicates it to be a 1 TB, 5400 rpm 9.5 mm.

That would mean you could use a SSD of a similar size but faster of course, or a typical 2.5" hard drive of similar size.

Windows 8.1 (64 bits) came with the PC, so assuming Windows 10 64bit is installed, now.

You can make the necessary Windows install media from here,

For the install media for Windows 10, you can make it from this Microsoft download

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

With a working PC, scroll down to the "Using the tool to create installation media"
and then follow the directions. You can make either the DVD or USB.

Ohh I don’t have another pc to install windows 10, what should I do?

You will need the Windows 10 install media, no way around that.  You could have a friend make the DVD or USB or you could go to the library.  I doubt that you wish to purchase the install media when it is free from Microsoft.
