Hi @CanmoreVP,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Pavilion 14 Laptop (14-dv2000) not switching off, even after holding down the power button for 30 seconds, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • May I know

1. Since when are you facing this issue

2. Have you made any changes on your PC post that this issue raised

3. Do You see a light glowing on the power button and next to the charging Port

Force Shutdown Using the Power Button:

  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds or more, even if the screen is not responding. This can force a hard shutdown.

Disconnect the Battery and Power:

  • If the battery is removable, remove the battery and unplug the power adapter.
  • Hold the power button down for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power cable (and battery, if removable) and try turning the laptop back on.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • With the laptop powered off, disconnect all peripherals (USB devices, external monitors, etc.).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-30 seconds to reset the hardware.
  • Afterward, try turning the laptop on again.

Check for Software or System Issues:

  • If the laptop eventually powers on but continues to have shutdown issues, a software issue may be causing it. Try updating your drivers and BIOS to the latest versions from HP’s support page.
  • Consider performing a system update or reset if there are persistent software-related problems.

Check for Stuck Keys:

  • Sometimes, a stuck key (especially the power or another key in the sleep/hibernate mode) might cause this issue. Check if any keys on the keyboard are physically stuck or malfunctioning.

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and check your settings. If the laptop is set to sleep or hibernate rather than fully shutting down, try changing these settings.

I hope this helps.

After the computer has been on for a few moments the screen starts to pixelate then goes blank (black). Think I will replace RAM see if this is the issue?
