In the HP diagnose and recovery. I finally was able somehow to stop the BSOD. So now I have at least all the time in the world back up files, etc. But it’s asking for my Outlook password which I no longer have. Does anyone know how to get around that?

Also it’s Windows 10, it all started with BSOD. I ran all the HP diagnostic tools, every time I went to save personal files it would start then BSOD came on. I repeated that quite a few times it got further each time. Finally I could save files to DVD usb etc. I don’t want them compressed now though, so I burned user files to dvd in compressed and it froze. Other options keep wanting my outlook password that I don’t have. Tried resetting it but says I don’t have enough proof to reset. I hope someone can help, it would be so appreciated

@Stefzbb232, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

You’ve done a great job navigating through a tough recovery situation. Since you’ve managed to stop the BSODs and can now back up files, that’s a big win. Let’s address the Outlook password issue and the compressed backup problem.

Outlook Password Issue (Microsoft Account Recovery)

If Windows is asking for your Outlook/Microsoft account password and you don’t have it, here are your options:

Try Microsoft Account Recovery

Go to: https://account.live.com/password/reset

If it says “not enough proof”, try:

  • Logging in from a device or location you’ve used before.
  • Providing alternate email or phone number if you had one linked.
  • Filling out the account recovery form:
    https://account.live.com/acsr

If recovery fails, you may need to create a new Microsoft account and reinstall Windows using that.

Backup Files Without Compression or Login

Since HP Recovery is compressing files or asking for login, here’s how to manually back up files without compression:

Use File Explorer (if Windows boots)

  • Navigate to:
    C:\Users\<YourUsername>\
  • Copy folders like:
    • Documents
    • Pictures
    • Desktop
    • Downloads
    • AppData (hidden folder for app settings)
  • Paste them directly to:
    • USB drive
    • External HDD
    • DVD (via drag-and-drop, not HP Recovery)

Use Command Prompt (if GUI is unstable)

Open Command Prompt and use:

xcopy "C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Documents" "E:\Backup\Documents" /E /H /C /I

Replace E: with your USB/DVD drive letter.

Next Steps After Backup

Once your files are safe:

  • Perform a clean install of Windows 10 using Windows Media Creation Tool
  • During setup, choose “I don’t have a Microsoft account” to create a local account
  • You can link a new Microsoft account later if needed

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!
