HP Stream 11-r050sa
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I Have been given HP Stream 11-r050sa that I want to give to my grandson, unfortunately it will not boot up.

I have examined Bios and it says factory installed OS is Win 10 but  how are the product keys displayed, I do not see anything

that looks like the product key string of characters in BIOS that I could note down, in case I needed to use the keys as part of recovering/rebuilding the OS..

Could you tell me the best way to restore/build a fresh Win 10 system , I was fearful that I might inadvertantly recovery  a Win  8.1 system  (considering the age of the notebook) (2016) and then not being able to upgrade to Win10 because I cannot locate the product key string. (in what form is it shown in the BIOS?).

Hope someone can help - I want to give this notebook as a Christmas present.

You don't need the Windows product key to reinstall Windows.  The key was saved at Microsoft so when you reinstall, just don't enter a key and Windows will get activated automatically once you reconnect to the Internet.

Also, you can't reset a Stream using internal media because the "drive" is way to small to hold the working files needed for that.

Here are the following ways to accomplish a factory reset:
- Factory reset using external HP image you make
- Factory reset using external HP image you buy

Each of these is discussed in some detail below ...
---------- Factory reset using external HP image you make ----------
HP provides a Cloud Recovery tool that you can use, together with a 32GB USB stick, to create your on HP reset media.

Here is the link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205

This works the same as the factory reset described above.

---------- Factory reset using external HP image you buy ----------
For those PCs not supported by the Cloud Recovery, in some cases, HP offers Recover Media for sale. This can not be downloaded; instead, it must be ordered from HP.

HP Recovery Media is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities.

In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks.

You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Once there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click &quot;Update&quot;.<br><br>If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the &quot;+&quot; symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.

Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Support.

HP contact info: https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true

If HP no longer carries the media you need, another site you should check for HP Recovery Media is: http://www.computersurgeons.com/

These work the same as the factory reset described above.

Thank you for the information.

I built a WIN 10 install on USB drive and installation went fine.

Established a WiFi connection and Win10 automatically ran updates.

No Activation msgs so as you said Product Key Info was in BIOS

During Install process I set up a Microsoft Account/Password using a new Gmail Accountas  ref and all was fine..

However when I restarted Stream and clicked 'Sign in' there was the rolling circle of dots for a while and then nothing,

so am unable to sign  in .

Any ideas please ?????

Sorry I meant to add that on the 'sign in' it did not even present the 'Password Entry' box.

@BEPiii

I don't use the MS account sign-in process but the last time I looked into this, I believe it used a PIN, not a password.  I think there is an option if you have both to select which you use.

But, we have no way to influence the MS account sign-in process and all you can do is the following:

go to the Microsoft account reset website: https://account.live.com/password/reset -or - go to the Sign in Microsoft Account website: https://login.live.com/

Then follow these instructions:
1) Click/tap on the Can't access your account link
2) Select why you can't sign into your account and click/tap on Next
3) Enter the email address of your Microsoft account, type in the characters displayed onscreen, and click/tap Next
4) Select how you would like to get your security code to verify your identity, click/tap Next
5) Enter your security code sent using the method selected in 4) above, click/tap Next
6) If you have enabled tw0-step verification, repeat steps 4) and 5) above using a different method to send you a different security code
7) Type in a new password, click/tap Next
😎 Your Microsoft account has been recovered -- click/tap on Next -- and you're done

Hi WAWood

Just thought I'd update you.

I logged into my Grandson's  new Gmail account which was set up for the purpose of him using the Stream 11 and found an email from Microsoft  requesting the this mailbox is the correct one to link to the Microsoft Account.

(interestingly when performing the win10 install , it did not let me skip the MS Account setup process - I usually just set up a local MS user when I first install Win 10).

I tried to verify the account with MS their process indicates there in a ' Temporary  Error - with the service and to retry.

Tried numerous times, but to no avail.

I am assuming that if I resolve the MS issues, the Win10 login process on the Stream will progress normally.

Will keep you posted.
