Hi,

You will need to replace the Hard Drive and reinstall the OS. If you can still boot into Windows, you should backup all your important data. If not, you can try to recover the data once you have removed the drive by using a USB to SATA cable.

you can use any 2.5" SATA3 Hard Drive (max 2TB because of the thickness of drive). You could also replace with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD (of your desired capacity) which would give a great boost to the everyday performance of the notebook.

Examples:

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0784SLQM6/ref=sr_1_2?crid=184962H9H6KFC...

On page 35 of the service manual, you can see the steps to install the drive

To install Windows again:

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

If hardrive is the issue than the PC should even start and windows shouldn't function but as I can see and operate PC with great lag and disk usage 100%.

Can you please tell me if the hardrive is faulty then why the PC is still operational

HP Recommended

Even if the computer is still functional, the hard drive will be creating many errors "and having a difficult time recovering the necessary info" as you can see by the extreme lag. It is surely not working well, but you could continue using it like that until complete failure.

Now, if you insert an SSD it will not only work better, but it will work even much better than when it was new.

I mean, if you have a car with a bad carburator, the engine might still run and the car "work", but it is not going to work well.

Hope it helps,

David

Thank you for the response and the analogy.

Can you please let me know the reasons for these failures so that I avoid them in future

Thanks
