Pavilion x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hello,

My laptop has been fixing an internal disk error for a couple of hours. After reading some community forums I conducted a internal check. And got this result

Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Failure ID: M7L611-96QA08-GXGJ3G-60SW03

Product ID: 4RH09UA#ABA

Im pretty sure this means I have to purchase a new hard drive but I just want to make sure. Before this I searched on the HP website and saw that they were all out of hard drives, but I could have looked at the wrong thing.

Could somebody please tell me if I

(a) have to purchase a new hard drive

(b) if so where can I buy one in the USA

Thank you so much!

Hi,

The failure id indicates that the Hard Drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

You have a few options.

The best would be to remove the 2.5" Hard Drive and install an M2 PCIe NVMe SSD. This would give an amazing boost to the everyday performance of the PC. Something like the Samsung 970 Evo Plus (fastest) or even the Crucial P1 (cheaper) would be much faster than a regular Hard Drive. You can get of your desired capacity (no limit)

Examples:

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-500GB-NAND-NVMe-PCIe/dp/B07J2WBKXF/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=crucial+p...

You can also replace it with a regular Hard Drive of your preferred brand. Max 2TB because of the thickness of the drive

Examples:

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-Internal-Drive-2-5-Inch/dp/B07H28QRKN/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2WMTC...

ore even with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD

On page 36 of service manual you can see how to install a M2 SSD and on page 40 how to remove the Hard Drive

To reinstall Windows here is a small guide:

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

When a hard disk short DST check fails, it usually means your hard drive has encountered a problem with one of the tested components. You can try some quick fix for the issue.

If the BIOS gives you a short DST failure error message, it’s a sign that your hard drive no longer works properly. You should focus on getting a replacement hard disk drive, either through your PC manufacturer’s warranty program or on your own. If you need data recovered from a hard disk that has failed a short DST check, you need to use external data recovery software.

If you need to purchase a new hard drive, you can check out HP store on https://store.hp.com/us/en/cv/accessories-filters?cat=tOrV_
