, how do i get the operating system details from HP to reinstall following a disk failure. not in possession of any data previously on the PC

According to the HP support site, that PC came with Windows 10 Home 64 bit.  You can get the Windows 10 install media from here, using a working PC

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Scroll down to the "Using the tool to create installation media" and follow the directions.  After the new hard drive is installed, boot to this new media and install Windows 10.  You might need some additional drivers from the support page, if Windows does not find all the correct ones.
