I had a Disk Error message for over 24 hours on my laptop, so I ran a Quick Test on the Hard Drive and got a failure message, with:
Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED
Failure ID: 9SP3LW-8A2B7T-XD7WMF-60UC03
It's an old laptop and I was thinking of replacing it, as most of my files are backed up. But a few more recent ones aren't. Is there any way of recovering those files?

Hi:
Most of the time when a drive fails you can't recover the files.
But you can toss a few quid at the problem, remove the drive and buy a SATA to USB cable.
Something like this...
Plug one end of the cable into the drive and the other end into a working PC's USB port and see if you can read/copy and files from the drive to the PC.
Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the hard drive removal procedure.

That was a pretty popular model series so there should be several YouTube videos out there.

Thanks. I've discovered that I backed up more than I thought I had and have managed to retrieve other documents from sent emails, so the actual damage is minimal. Just going to have to live with it and get a new laptop, I think.
