I ran system diagnostics and when I did the hard disk test I get
"Test 1 (quick) ... error: read failureerror:read failure"
and nothing else.
How do I fix my computer? I'm lost.

It means hard drive has failed to work anymore. You've to replace it with a new one of similar form factor.
If you're within 1 year manufacturer warranty, HP would replace it free of cost. Contact HP technical support
Have you created HP Recovery USB using HP Recovery Manager after first setup of the notebook? You've to use this media to factory reset after HDD replacement.
I see you're using Windows 10 in this notebook? If so, there is an option to clean install Windows 10 using Microsoft windows media creation tool by creating Windows 10 USB installation media.
If you need to salvage data from failed drive, please take out the HDD and connect to another laptop using SATA to USB adapter. Then try copying files through Windows Explorer.

It was a refurbished computer bought through Wal-Mart. Probably not under the original warranty as a refurb. I think it had Win7 when it was new. I hadn't gotten round to making a recovery disk. Thanks for the tip on recovering data. I was afraid that the only thing I could do was to replace the hdd. So new hdd and OS disk is all I can do?

Yes that's what you want to do now.
