Hi @KenGoddard,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When your HP Envy 15" laptop powers up and indicates that there is no operating system (OS) on the hard drive, here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:
Step 1: Check BIOS Settings
Ensure the BIOS recognizes the hard drive and that the boot order is correctly set.
- Access BIOS: Turn on the laptop and press the Esc or F10 key repeatedly to enter the BIOS setup.
- Check Boot Order: Navigate to the boot options and ensure the hard drive is set as the primary boot device.
- Check Hard Drive Recognition: Verify that the hard drive is listed in the BIOS. If it’s not listed, there may be a connection issue or the hard drive may be faulty.
Step 2: Check Hard Drive Connections
Ensure the hard drive is properly connected to the laptop.
- Turn Off the Laptop: Power down the laptop and unplug it.
- Remove the Back Cover: Open the back cover of the laptop to access the hard drive.
- Check Connections: Ensure the hard drive is securely connected to the motherboard.
- Reassemble and Test: Close the back cover, power on the laptop, and see if the issue is resolved.
Step 3: Perform a Hard Drive Diagnostic
Use HP's built-in diagnostic tools to check the hard drive's health.
- Access HP Diagnostics: Turn on the laptop and press Esc to access the startup menu, then press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Run Hard Drive Test: Select the option to run a hard drive test and follow the on-screen instructions. This will check for any errors or failures on the hard drive.
Step 4: Repair the Operating System
If the hard drive is recognized but the OS is missing or corrupted, you can attempt to repair the OS.
- Create a Windows Installation Media: On another computer, download the Windows Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft website and create a bootable USB drive.
- Boot from USB: Insert the USB drive into your HP Envy laptop and boot from it by pressing Esc or F9 to access the boot menu.
- Repair Your Computer: Select the option to repair your computer and follow the on-screen instructions to attempt to repair the existing OS.
Step 5: Reinstall the Operating System
If the repair process doesn’t work, you may need to reinstall the OS.
- Boot from USB: Use the bootable USB drive created in Step 4.
- Reinstall Windows: Select the option to install Windows. Follow the on-screen instructions to format the hard drive and perform a clean installation of Windows.
Step 6: Replace the Hard Drive
If the hard drive is faulty and none of the above steps work, you may need to replace the hard drive.
- Purchase a New Hard Drive: Buy a compatible replacement hard drive or SSD for your laptop.
- Install New Hard Drive: Follow the steps to install the new hard drive in your laptop.
- Install the Operating System: Use the bootable USB drive to install a fresh copy of Windows on the new hard drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
