Hi,

I had my laptop turned on in front of me while using my phone today when it suddenly turned off and the screen said that there is a hard drive error.

I ran all tests, even for memory, and it said that the DST test has failed, everything else was okay.

I have read a few threads here and it looks like i need to replace the hard drive. Luckily, I still have the warranty.

My question is: does the HP service provide services such as a recovery of data from this hard drive? I saw a post when something like a recovery media is needed, but I am not sure what to do. I would like to send the laptop for this replacement, but I need to get my files copied first.

Please let me know if any other information is needed. I hope I can get some good advice here.

Bart

Hello @zawarudo

Thank you for posting in the HP Support Community.

I checked the error code in internal system and it confirms that HDD has failed. You are in the best possible scenario - in-warranty PC, so your HDD will be replaced for free. Here is how to contact HP Support in the UK >> https://www8.hp.com/uk/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html

Video instructions >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFi6lQ5lU_c

  • With regards to data recovery - since the HDD is faulty, this is hardware problem. Data recovery cannot be guaranteed. HP cannot attempt data recovery - this is usually not included. You may try it yourself before sending it for service - although no guarantee.
  • There are several ways. You can try 2 of them:

>> Using Linux Ubuntu - last post from this thread (bottom post) >> https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/HP-Envy-Not-Booting-Up/m-p/5906031#M103341

>> Using Windows Recovery environment >> F11 - described here >> https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Windows-10-desktop-screen-not-f...

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes and if successful  😉

Please, consider data back up (archive) on external device next time

Unfortunately, HP doesn't provide data recovery services. If the data is critical you might check on a third-party professional data recovery provider like Ontrack. https://www.ontrack.com/.
