@Vinay7082, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand you're facing an issue where pressing the mute button on your HP 15s laptop unexpectedly opens Magnifier and Microsoft Edge, and then the keyboard stops responding. Let's work through this step-by-step to resolve it.

Check for Stuck Modifier Keys

Sometimes, Sticky Keys or a stuck Windows key can cause unusual behavior.

  1. Press Shift key 5 times quickly to toggle Sticky Keys off.
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del and check if the keyboard responds there.
  3. Try an external USB keyboard to see if the issue persists.

Disable Shortcut Conflicts

The mute button might be triggering accessibility shortcuts.

Turn off Magnifier shortcut:

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier.
  • Scroll down and disable the shortcut:
"Keyboard shortcut for Magnifier" → Turn off Win + Plus (+).

Disable Edge from launching on hotkeys:

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  • Go to Startup tab and disable Microsoft Edge if listed.

Update or Reinstall Keyboard Drivers

Corrupted drivers can cause key misbehavior.

  1. Press Win + X → Select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards → Right-click your keyboard → Select Uninstall device.
  3. Restart your laptop. Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

Alternatively, you can download the latest drivers from the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.

Perform a Hard Reset

This can clear any hardware-level glitches.

  1. Shut down the laptop.
  2. Disconnect the power adapter.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect power and turn it

Check for HP Hotkey Support Software

HP laptops often rely on HP Hotkey Support or HP Quick Launch Buttons software to manage function keys.

  1. Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  2. Enter your HP 15s model number (e.g., 15s-fqxxxx).
  3. Look under Software-Solutions or Driver-Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices.
  4. Download and install HP Hotkey Support or HP System Event Utility if available.
  5. Restart your laptop.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

This will help check if the mute button or keyboard hardware is faulty.

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  3. Select Component Tests > Keyboard.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to test the mute key and other keys.

Create a New User Profile

Sometimes, user profile corruption can cause strange behavior.

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
  2. Click Add someone else to this PC.
  3. Create a new local user account.
  4. Log in with the new account and test the mute button.

Perform a System Restore (if issue started recently)

If the issue began after a recent update or change:

  1. Press Win + R, type rstrui, and press Enter.
  2. Choose a restore point before the issue started.
  3. Follow the prompts to restore your system.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
