Hello, I recently bought an HP ENVY x360 13 and have been having problems with hibernation not working.

Sleep works fine for the short intervals when I am not using the laptop, but I like to use hibernate for overnight or long periods during the day while not using the laptop.  Also, I can't put it in my bag if it is in Modern Standby because it will overheat.

Expected behavior is clicking hibernate in the shutdown menu and the screen goes black and the fan stops spinning.  The laptop should use minimal power and not be woken up until the lid is opened or the power buttons is pressed.

Current behavior is upon click Hibernate button the Hibernating... message pops up for a split-second then screen goes black for about 3 seconds BUT then I can hear the fans kick back on and the laptop starts up to the lock screen. It will never stay in hibernate.

Also, I cannot shut down unless I disable Fast Startup in the advanced power settings. I think Fast Startup actually uses the hibernation file to restart the computer faster so the issues are probably linked.

Some information I have gathered while diagnosing this issue.

After the abrupt restart from the borked hibernate I can run "powercfg /requests" in cmd and see a [DRIVER] Legacy Kernel Caller Power Manager message under the PERFBOOST: section.  It will eventually go away if I check the /requests again but will 100% be there after a failed hibernate.

I tried the override command for Legacy Kernel Caller but it didn't help. I have also checked all my devices and disabled any "Allow this device to wake the computer" check boxes.

Nothing has fixed the problem yet.

I am on Windows 11 build 26100.4946 and have the latest BIOS firmware and drivers are up to date according to the HP Support Assistant.

Hi @allOutaGum,

Thanks for the update, and great job navigating the registry tweak to disable Modern Standby.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening based on your system and the image:

Sleep State Behaviour After Disabling Modern Standby

  • Your system now only supports Hibernate (powercfg /a confirms this).
  • Sleep (S3) and Hybrid Sleep are unavailable because:
    • Your system firmware doesn’t support S0 Low Power Idle (Modern Standby).
    • Disabling Modern Standby doesn’t automatically enable legacy sleep states unless supported by the BIOS.

About the Power Light Behaviour

  • On systems using Modern Standby (S0), the power light often turns off completely during sleep. This is normal.
  • On systems using S3 Sleep, the light typically pulses slowly to indicate sleep.
  • Since your system doesn’t support S3, and now only hibernates, the light will stay off. This is expected behaviour.

What You Can Do

If you want traditional sleep (S3) back:

  • Check BIOS settings for an option like “Legacy Sleep States” or “S3 Enable” Not all HP firmware offers this.
  • If unavailable, your system is limited to Hibernate and Shutdown.

 I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @allOutaGum,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You’ve done an excellent job diagnosing the issue, and your observations about Fast StartupLegacy Kernel Caller, and Modern Standby overheating are spot-on. This is a challenge using Modern Standby (S0ix) instead of traditional S3 sleep/hibernate modes.

Let’s go through a structured fix based on HP and Microsoft’s best practices:

1. Disable Modern Standby (S0ix) – Advanced Step

Modern Standby can interfere with hibernate. You can try disabling it via the registry:

⚠️ This may not work on all systems and could affect battery life.

  • Open Registry Editor (Win + R, type regedit)
  • Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
  • Look for a key named PlatformAoAcOverride
    • If it exists, set its value to 0
    • If it doesn’t exist, create a new DWORD (32-bit) value named PlatformAoAcOverride and set it to 0
  • Restart your laptop

This forces Windows to use S3 sleep, which supports proper hibernation.

2. Disable Fast Startup (You’ve Done This – Good!)

Fast Startup uses the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) and can conflict with true hibernation.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup

3. Override Legacy Kernel Caller

You mentioned trying this, but just to confirm: powercfg /requestsoverride driver "Legacy Kernel Caller" system

Then reboot and check again with: powercfg /requests

If it still appears, it may be tied to a background service or driver (e.g., Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework).

4. Update Intel DPTF and Chipset Drivers

These updates often resolve power management conflicts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you for the reply.

So I added the registry entry and it has disabled Modern Standby but now I am missing sleep altogether.

In other news, hibernation started working again.  I actually didn't do anything different, it just decided to start working.

Hopefully it keeps working.

Some more information. I have a Ryzen 3500U version of this convertible laptop. I have updated the bios to the latest provided by HP and also the AMD chipset drivers are up to date.

I actually started another thread with a related problem.  When I was using Modern Standby the power light on the side of my laptop was not blinking. It would go completely off while in sleep mode. Is this normal? It seems like most laptops pulse or something to indicate they are in sleep and not hibernate, or off.

Thank you for the assistance and good explanation.

It is really unfortunate that S3 has been removed from a lot of modern laptops. Modern Standby is really nor reliable and one of the worst parts about the Windows ecosystem.

I had an M1 Mac before I had this Envy x360 and being able to just close the lid and never worry about the battery draining or it overheating in my bag was something I guess I was taking for granted.

I have managed to get S0 working closer to a Mac by switching it to "Network Disconnected" by using some commands I found on the internet.

My advice to HP would be to add the ability to toggle Network Connected mode in Modern Standby to their laptops. It would be a step in the right direction to improving Microsoft's terrible implementation.
