When I turn on the computer it says Recovery Your PC/Device needs to be repaired. Also, the screen goes dark.

@Helplease70, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a couple of issues on your HP Notebook. Let's tackle them step-by-step:

Issue 1: Recovery Error

The "Recovery Your PC/Device needs to be repaired" message typically indicates a problem with the Boot Configuration Data (BCD). Here are some steps you can try:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Shut down your computer.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.).
  • Hold the power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and turn on your computer.

Use Recovery Tools:

  • If you have a recovery USB or disc, insert it.
  • Restart your computer and press the Esc key repeatedly to open the HP Startup Menu.
  • Select F9 for boot options and follow the on-screen instructions to boot from the recovery media.

System Diagnostics:

  • Restart your computer and press the Esc key repeatedly to open the HP Startup Menu.
  • Select F2 to run System Diagnostics and perform a quick test to check for hardware issues.

Issue 2: Screen Goes Dark

If your screen goes dark, it could be due to several reasons. Here are some troubleshooting steps:

Check Display Settings:

  • Ensure the brightness settings are not set too low. You can adjust this in the Display settings under System.

Hard Reset:

  • Similar to the steps above, perform a hard reset by holding the power button for 15 seconds.

Connect an External Monitor:

  • Connect an external monitor to your laptop to check if the issue is with the screen or the graphics driver.

Recover the BIOS:

  • Power off your laptop.
  • Hold the Windows + B keys while pressing the power button to initiate a BIOS recovery.

Reseat Memory Modules:

  • If you're comfortable, you can try reseating the memory modules. This involves removing and reinstalling the RAM.

I hope this helps.
