You used two very different terms -- erase and wipe.
The first means to remove the directory entries so that Windows no longer sees the files of folders. It does NOT actually remove the contents of the files and any decent data recovery app can get those back.
The second writes ones, zeroes, or both to the drive, removing the contents and making data recovery impossible. The app that @ieee488 recommended is one of the most popular ones for wiping drives.
