Hi @Jimmybow

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If your HP 17.3" laptop running Windows 11 is locked by BitLocker, you’ll need the BitLocker recovery key to regain access. BitLocker is a security feature that encrypts your drive to protect your data, and it activates automatically in some cases—especially if you sign in with a Microsoft account or change hardware settings.

Here’s how to unlock or disable BitLocker:

1. Retrieve Your BitLocker Recovery Key

This is essential to unlock the drive.

Visit:
BitLocker Recovery Key – Microsoft

Sign in with the Microsoft account you used on the laptop.

Look for a 48-digit recovery key associated with your device.

If you don’t see it there, check:

  • Any printed or saved copy you may have stored
  • Your organization’s IT admin (if managed by school or work)

2. Enter the Recovery Key at Startup

If your laptop is prompting for the key at boot:

  • Type the 48-digit key exactly as shown.
  • Press Enter to unlock the drive.

Once unlocked, you can choose to suspend or disable BitLocker.

3. Disable BitLocker (Optional)

If you want to turn off BitLocker permanently:

  • Open Control Panel > System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption
  • Click Turn off BitLocker next to your system drive
  • Confirm and allow decryption to complete (this may take time)

4. Use HP’s BitLocker Support Guide

For model-specific instructions and recovery options, visit:
HP BitLocker Support

Let me know if your laptop is stuck at the recovery screen or if you’re unsure which account was used—I can help guide you through alternate recovery paths.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
