I can’t type the £ symbol.  When I do shift3 I get the hash key.

That's because you have a U.S. keyboard, and they don't have the "pound sign" on them.

What the folks in the US call a "pound sign" is actually a crosstick, or what folks nowadays call a "hashtag" -- but NOT a "pound sign". 

This symbol is on some European keyboards, but not on US keyboards.

However ... with some work, there are ways to enter these "special" characters:  https://support.office.com/en-us/article/insert-ascii-or-unicode-latin-based-symbols-and-characters-...
