I want to recover all the files that were deleted from my file explorer when performing a reset. I purposely activated system recovery by pressing the F11 key when I restarted my computer before the reset was performed so that I could select the option to KEEP MY FILES. HP always does this to my PC whenever a restart is needed to install updates, it deletes my files, data, and browser settings. So frustrating!

I am wondering if there is a way to recover my data as well as to prevent this type of loss from occurring the next time updates need to be installed.

Thank you!

This is how a reset works -- why do you keep doing resets?

All you will be able to recover at best from the drive is personal data -- and even that requires that the deleted files have not been overwritten:
1) Insert a USB stick into the PC that is large enough to hold all the files and folders you want to recover. You need this because you can not recover erased or deleted files to the same drive.
2) Download and install this utility http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...
2) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the drive.

If that tool does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva

And, if that does not work well, the best tool out there is this one, but only the demo version is free https://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

It wasn't my intention to perform a reset, my laptop wouldn't wake up after I put it in sleep mode so I called HP Support and they told me this was the only way to get it to start again. As I said, I wanted to make sure the files would be saved despite the reset so I opened up system recovery upon restart and selected the option to keep my files. I don't understand why it would delete everything given that I chose this option.

Anyways, I downloaded Stellar Data Recovery and am currently running it. I will see what it turns up and if this doesn't work, I will try your suggestions.

Thank you for your help.
