Hi @DAVE958

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here are detailed steps to address the issue where your HP laptop requests a "navigation system on the hard drive" (likely referring to the absence of a bootable operating system):

Step 1: Access BIOS/UEFI and Check Boot Order

  1. Turn on your laptop and immediately press F10, Esc, or Delete (depending on your model) to enter the BIOS/UEFI settings.
  2. Look for the Boot Order or Boot Priority settings.
  3. Ensure the hard drive is listed as the primary boot device. If not, adjust the order so that the hard drive is first.
  4. Save changes and restart your laptop.

Step 2: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly during startup to access the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool.
  2. Select Component Tests > Hard Drive Test and run a full check.
  3. Review the results to identify whether the hard drive is damaged.

Step 3: Create a Bootable USB to Reinstall Windows

  1. On another computer, download the Windows Media Creation Tool.
  2. Follow the instructions to create a bootable USB drive with Windows installation files.
  3. Insert the USB drive into your HP laptop.
  4. Restart the laptop and press F9 during startup to open the Boot Menu.
  5. Select the USB drive as the boot device and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Windows.

Step 4: Check Hard Drive Connection

  1. If comfortable with hardware, turn off the laptop and remove the battery (if removable).
  2. Open the back cover to access the hard drive.
  3. Ensure the hard drive is securely connected to the motherboard.
  4. Close the laptop and attempt to restart it.
