Hello, I have an HP laptop with windows 10 and yesterday it restarted by itself due to some issues, as it started back up again it had a black screen and stayed as a black screen instead of turning back to the usual home screen.
I’ve tried different ways to get it to work, which are the following: Click both F8 and F9 on different tries upon start up to bring up safe mode and the other thing. As well as clicking shift repeatedly to bring up ‘sticky keys’ but it did not work either. Safe mode did not come up but when I used F9 and gave me two options, I forgot the first one but I proceeded with the second one ‘restart pc’.
It restarted and it went back to a black screen, I’ve also taken out the battery and put it back in as well as a hard reset.
Any suggestions would be great, I have a lot of art files as well as pictures I would like to save so I just need to get on it once more. Also it is over 2 years old but under 3 years I believe.

The directions here are for doing a System Restore-which may work- but you can also get into Safe Mode by clicking Startup Settings.

Thank you for replying so quick, unfortunately the steps show that I must be able to access the normal home screen first, and currently my issue is that I am stuck on a black screen and unable to bring up safe mode or anything.

The steps say to shut down the laptop. Power on and immediately start tapping the F11 key which should avoid the black screen. Some models it is required to start tapping Esc immediatley after powering on to open a startup menu where you tap F11.

I’ve tried that and it has lead me to a system restore BUT it said that I did not have a system restore in place, or to rephrase it, I have never done a system restore so my only choice was to exit out of the system restore and let my laptop restart, which led it to a black screen again.

When you booted to F11 did you see Advanced Options? If so choose it and you will find the option to use Safe Mode.
