Hi,

The following assumes you're trying to install a 64bit version of Windows 7 and the HDD has a GUID Partition Table.

Shutdown the notebook.

Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Bios Menu ( f10 ).

Under the System Configuration tab, expand the Boot Options Menu.

You need to set Secure Boot to Disabled and Legacy Devices to Enabled.

When done, press f10 and select to save the changes.

You may then have to enter a 4 digit pin displayed on the screen to confirm the setting changes - enter the code and hit enter.

Insert the Windows 7 installation disc and Shutdown the notebook.

Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ).

Use the arrow keys to highlight the CDROM (uefi) option and hit enter - if prompted to 'Press any key to continue....' - do so.

Hi

You may want to disable Secure Boot in order to install new hardware or boot from a CD or DVD. Follow these steps to disable Secure Boot:
1) Turn ON the computer.
2) Immediately press the Esc key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens.
3) Use the right arrow key to choose the System Configuration menu, use the down arrow key to select Boot Options, then press Enter.
4) Use the down arrow key to select Secure Boot, press the Enter key, then use the down arrow key to modify the setting to Disabled.
5) Press Enter to save the change.
6) Use the left arrow key to select the File menu, use the down arrow key to select Save Changes and Exit, then press Enter to select Yes.
7) The Computer Setup Utility closes and the computer restarts. When the computer has restarted, the Operating System Boot Mode Change screen appears, prompting you to confirm the Boot Options change. Type the code shown on the screen, then press Enter to confirm the change and continue to Windows.

Then insert the Windows 7 disc and once unit is powered on keep tapping the F9 key and select CD/DVD drive click on enter and follow the instruction.

Let us know how it goes!

I have just purchased a HP 255G5 running free dos and want to install win 7 64 bit using a usb dvd drive and genuine windows ultimate disc and followed your advice although I have no idead if the hard drive has a GUID partition - I suspect many people will not.    I got as far as 'press any key to continue' but it then says there are files missing and instalation cannot continue.

Changing the boot order did not seem to make ant difference.
