Hi @Wangmo1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Reinstalling Windows 7 and ensuring it runs as a genuine copy involves a series of steps that include preparing installation media, performing the installation, and activating the operating system. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

1. Prepare Installation Media

1.1. Obtain Windows 7 Installation Media

  • Download ISO File: If you have a valid Windows 7 product key, you can download a Windows 7 ISO file from the Microsoft Software Recovery website or use a Windows 7 installation disc if you have one.

1.2. Create Bootable Installation Media

Using a USB Drive:

  1. Download a Tool: Use a tool like Rufus to create a bootable USB drive.
  2. Insert USB Drive: Connect a USB drive with at least 4 GB of storage to your computer.
  3. Open Rufus: Select the USB drive and choose the Windows 7 ISO file.
  4. Create Bootable USB: Follow the prompts to create the bootable USB drive.

Using a DVD:

  1. Burn ISO to DVD: Use a DVD burning tool to burn the Windows 7 ISO file to a DVD. Tools like ImgBurn can help with this process.

2. Backup Your Data

  • Backup Important Files: Before reinstalling Windows 7, back up all important data to an external drive or cloud storage.

3. Reinstall Windows 7

3.1. Boot from Installation Media

  1. Insert Media: Insert the bootable USB drive or DVD into your laptop.
  2. Access Boot Menu: Restart your laptop and enter the boot menu. This usually involves pressing a key like F12, Esc, F2, or Del during startup (the key varies by manufacturer).
  3. Select Boot Device: Choose the USB drive or DVD as the boot device.

3.2. Start Windows 7 Installation

  1. Load Installation: The Windows 7 installer will start. Choose your language, time, and keyboard preferences, then click Next.
  2. Install Now: Click on Install Now to begin the installation process.
  3. Accept License Terms: Review and accept the license terms, then click Next.

3.3. Choose Installation Type

Select Custom Installation:

  • Choose Custom (advanced) if you want to perform a clean installation.
  • Upgrade is only used if you’re upgrading from a previous version of Windows 7.

Select Partition:

  • Choose the partition where you want to install Windows 7. You can delete existing partitions and create a new one if needed (note: this will erase all data on the partition).

Start Installation:

  • Click Next to start the installation. The process will take some time and your computer may restart several times.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
