My computer is running in a 'Performing Automatic Repair' Loop when I turn it on. I have been able to run some basic diagnostics which show Short DST hard drive failure. I did not run a long DST diagnostic. All other diagnostics were ok.

Next I tried to "restore" to a previous date, but after several hours this failed. Error message received for this stated: "System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.

Source: %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApps

Destination: AppXStaging

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x800701b1)"

After this, upon startup of the computer I used the "esc" key to access a blue screen with menu options from which I chose "Troubleshoot" followed by "Advanced Options". Under this menu I had the option to do a File Backup which I created and have saved to a USB.

At this point I am unsure how to proceed.

1. Can I do a system recovery and would that fix a short DST hard drive failure?

2. What to do I do with this USB drive and file backup? When I plug the USB into a new computer it contains the Backup folder in which there are 2 folders labeled "FBData" and "language", 4 .dll files labeled "BurnLibrary.dll", "DiscVerifierLib.dll", "FileBrowser.dll",  and "HPFileMgr.dll", and finally there is a "Restore" Application.

  • How do I run this Restore application? Is there any way to get the files by using this USB on a  NEW computer, or is this only to try to restore on the old doomed HP?

Hi:

You will need to replace the hard drive before reinstalling the operating system.

Consult your notebook's service manual for replacement of whatever type of drive your notebook came with.

It is very difficult to provide detailed help when you do not provide any details about your notebook...model number, product number what operating system...
