The Specs page for this laptop says it is a Windows 7 64bit machine- Not an XP machine.Unless you downgraded it to XP?
While it probably can run Windows 10 you may have trouble finding drivers for audio, wireless adapter, etc. If it is running Windows 7 you should be able to upgrade rather than clean install.
Either way-you will need to purchase a license key to activate Windows 10.

If the old HP can run Windows 10, then it has to be purchased, since there is no upgrade path from WinXP to windows 10. It also needs to be a clean install for the same reason. You can see if the old laptop can run windows 10 by going to the Windows 10 page at M$

Dear TheOldMan:
Your answer to the point.
I read the article you referred. Since my system I am improving is wXP, the article says that I can download a *.iso file to clean install w10 to replace the old wXP. I am going to use Fresh-Drive.
Before downloading. I need to know 32bit or 64bit. This PC is old HP laptop and system is old wXPpro sp3. How can I know that I should use 32 bit or 64 bit?
Sorry for troubling you! --Zhao

Considering the PC is old and probably does not have more the 4GB of memory, then either one could be OK but if any additional memory has been added then 64bit. An additional concern would be the availablity of drivers. Possibly search for the drivers and save them on a flash drive for after the install, but do it before. By that I mean that 64bit drviers or 32bit drivers because you will need all of them in one version in order install the OS.
That idea of using a new hard drive with the Windows 10 install is a good one, IMHO.
