That model DOES support Windows, as it comes with Windows 7 or 8 already loaded.
There are also HP Win7 and Win8 drivers for that model, at this page: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-655-notebook-pc/5225017
The product number comes from the OEM licensed windows that was on it. If your friend removed Windows, they also probably trashed the license. It won't show a product number until Windows is up and running.
IF you have serious lagging and crashes, then most likely, the hard drive is failing or already failed, and if that is the case, you won't be able to install anything on it.
The best choice for the PC at this time, if you want an HP license, is Windows 8 64-bit. That's because HP has Win8 drivers for it and you need HP drivers for it to work properly. And to get the HP version of that, you would need to contact HP and order Recovery Media.

Thanks for your help
so iwant to ask now about two points
1. if there were a product number there would be anyway to identify it from hp support?
2. If I choose win 8 you mean 8 not 8.1
and which more suitable version for windows home or pro or enterprise
and which better using uefi or mbr
thanks again

The model number is printed on a sticker on the PC. If not on the case, it might be inside the battery compartment.
It will look something like these:
HP only has drivers for Win7 and Win8, not Win8.1
IF you order HP Recovery Media, it will install the correct version -- it will be home or pro, not Enterprise.
Also, it will format the drive in the process, so if this PC came with Win7 preloaded, it is likely BIOS/MBR. If it came with Win8 preloaded, it is likelu UEFI/GPT. Again, the HP Recovery Media handles that.
