I am trying to restore my computer to an earlier point, but when I try all the restore points it says it can't do it, unspecified error 0x80070017 which scares me (I am not a computer tech person but can do some things).  I am getting a pop up that says my computer is infected which I know is a scam but Windows Defender, Google Chrome and the free version of Avast, and Comcast's antivirus doesn't find anything.  So I thought I'd restore to an earlier point but now I can't.

First of all, despite what others may have told you, System Restore is NOT like a time machine -- it does not restore your PC to a previous date.  When Windows Updates are performed, the system files being changed or deleted are saved off -- into something known as a Restore Point.  So, when you do a restore, all you are doing is overwriting the current system files with those saved on that date.

Second, unless you made an image backup -- and if you had, you would have mentioned it -- there is really no way to send your PC back to a previous date.

The popup is likely a SCAM but you should do online searched with the text message it is providing to see the steps needed to disable and remove it.
