HP Laptop PC 15s-fq2000

Hello, my laptop was working fine and then it crashed stating iastorvd.sys error and with stop code error driver irql not less or equal

 

i ran system diagnostics from esc menu option being system fast test and system extensive test and all hardware, battery tests passed and no errors, issues etc identified. 

 

i was then able to access windows safe mode and this only lasted for 5 minutes until isatorvd error again. 

 

laptop is now stuck in automatic repair screen just looping. 

 

i cannot access any options from F8 or F11 screen and or the escape button options

 

i have never dropped the laptop, spilt fluids, had a blown screen or any components replaced. i look after my tech. as an example i still have a fully functioning iphone4 i use and my commodore64. 

 

the laptop will be four years old in August 2025. i cannot confirm if it is a windows 32 or 64. 

 

i can supply pics as well of laptop screens

 

any assistance greatly appreciated

The iastorvd.sys error is related to Intel's Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver, which manages storage devices. The "driver IRQL not less or equal" error indicates a driver conflict or corruption. Given that your laptop is now stuck in an automatic repair loop and you cannot access recovery options via F8, F11, or Esc, follow these steps carefully.

 

1. Confirm System Architecture (32-bit or 64-bit)

Your HP 15s-fq2000 typically comes with Windows 64-bit, but you mentioned uncertainty. If you can access any part of Windows, check:

  • In Safe Mode, open Command Prompt (cmd.exe) and type: wmic os get osarchitecture
  • If it returns 64-bit, your system is 64-bit.
  • If it returns 32-bit, your system is 32-bit.

2. Disable Intel RST in BIOS (Try Booting Without It)

Since the issue is related to iastorvd.sys, disabling Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) in BIOS can help.

  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Enter BIOS:
    • Power on the laptop and immediately press F10 repeatedly until the BIOS menu appears.
  • Find Storage Configuration:
    • Look for SATA Mode, Storage Configuration, or Intel RST settings (varies by BIOS version).
  • Change SATA Controller Mode:
    • If set to RAID (Intel RST), change it to AHCI.
    • If already on AHCI, try toggling it between RAID and AHCI and test again.
  • Save changes and exit BIOS.
    • Press F10 to save and restart.

3. Boot Using Windows Recovery Media

Since you cannot access recovery options via F8, F11, or Esc, you need a Windows recovery USB.

Create a Bootable Windows USB

  • Use another working PC to download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool:
    Download here (official Microsoft site).
  • Follow the steps to create a bootable USB drive.
  • Insert the USB into your HP laptop and boot from it:
    • Power on the laptop and press Esc repeatedly.
    • Select Boot Device Options (F9).
    • Choose USB Drive to boot from.
  • Once in the Windows Setup screen, choose:
    • Repair your computer.

4. Run Startup Repair

  • From the recovery options, select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair.
  • If Startup Repair fails, proceed to Step 5.

5. Use Command Prompt to Repair Boot Files

  • Open Command Prompt from the recovery menu.
  • Run these commands one by one:
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /scanos
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    •  
  • If bootrec /fixboot fails, try: bcdboot C:\Windows /s C: /f ALL
  • Restart the laptop and check if it boots.

6. Uninstall Intel RST Driver via Command Prompt

  • In Command Prompt, type: dism /image:C:\ /get-drivers
    • Find the iastorvd.sys or Intel RST driver.
  • Uninstall the problematic driver:(Replace <drivername.inf> with the actual driver file.)
    • dism /image:C:\ /remove-driver /driver:<drivername.inf>

7. System Restore (If Available)

  1. From the Windows recovery menu, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
  2. Choose a restore point before the error started.

8. Reinstall Windows (If All Else Fails)

If no method works, you may need to reinstall Windows:

  1. Boot from the USB installation media.
  2. Choose Install Now but select "Keep Personal Files".
  3. Follow the prompts to reinstall Windows.

Final Notes

  • If AHCI mode works, you can later update Intel RST from the HP website.
  • If Safe Mode remains unstable, this suggests a deeper driver or corruption issue.
  • If you suspect SSD failure, run diagnostics in BIOS (F2) > Storage Test.

hello Garp,

 

so i followed your instructions and ran from the command prompt and restarted laptop etc and no success. 

 

i noticed when running the bootrec command it stated windows installation nil. the bootrec fixboot command stated access denied. 

 

i attempted after the rebuildbcd attempt your next suggestion and this replied failure when attempting to copy boot files. 

 

i tried restarting and had same error as before

We might have to wipe Windows and start fresh. Since bcdboot is failing and scanos sees nothing, the installation might be too corrupted to recover.
