Hi @bjg22,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
When your HP Envy x360 convertible laptop gets stuck on a black screen with the HP logo and a spinning circle, and you're unable to shut it down using the power button, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Perform a Hard Reset:
- Force Shutdown: Press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until the laptop powers off completely. This should forcibly shut down the laptop.
2. Disconnect External Devices:
- Unplug Accessories: Disconnect any external devices or peripherals (like USB drives, printers, etc.) that might be connected to the laptop.
3. Check for Disk Activity:
- Observe Disk Activity: Sometimes, the spinning circle indicates that the system is still processing. Wait for a few minutes to see if there's any disk activity (indicated by the HDD/SSD light blinking).
4. Boot into Safe Mode:
- Safe Mode: Restart the laptop and repeatedly press the F8 key or Shift+F8 as it boots to access Advanced Boot Options. From there, choose Safe Mode. If it boots successfully into Safe Mode, you can troubleshoot further from there (like checking for software conflicts or performing system restores).
5. Perform System Restore:
- System Restore: If Safe Mode is accessible, you can try performing a system restore to revert the laptop to a previous state where it was functioning correctly.
6. BIOS Update:
- Update BIOS: Visit HP's official website, enter your laptop model and download the latest BIOS update if available. Sometimes, BIOS updates include fixes for startup and shutdown issues.
7. Reset Windows:
- Reset Windows: As a last resort, you can reset Windows. This will reinstall Windows while keeping your personal files intact. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC > Get started.
If none of the above steps work, contact HP Support for further assistance.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
