Hi, my HP ENVY - 13-aq1013dx laptop randomly turned off last night and didn’t respond to the on button, but made the quietest whirring sound. So I did a shut down by pressing and holding the power button and then when powering back on it immediately requested I initiate a BIOS update. I did, and it’s now been “updating” with the inner fan on for ~10 hours and a blank dark(not off) screen on display.
How can I fix this without damaging my laptop?
also, could this all be because I had my laptop closed in a hot car and then used it some hours after taking it out?

Hi @Camv247,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP ENVY 13 laptop may have encountered an issue during the BIOS update process. Leaving your laptop in a hot car for extended periods can definitely cause hardware issues, particularly with the battery and components overheating. While the exact cause of the freeze may be related to the heat exposure, let’s focus on safely resolving the BIOS update issue first.
Here’s what you can do to try and resolve this without causing damage to your laptop.
Steps to Fix the Frozen BIOS Update:
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Disconnect the laptop from any power source (unplug the power adapter).
- Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to fully power off the laptop.
- Wait for a few minutes, then reconnect the power adapter.
- Power the laptop back on and see if it resumes normally. Sometimes, this can reset the update process.
Use the BIOS Recovery Feature:
- Turn off the laptop if it is still stuck.
- Press and hold the Windows + B keys, then press the power button for 2–3 seconds, while still holding the Windows + B keys.
- Release the buttons and wait. The BIOS recovery feature should trigger and either attempt to resume or recover the BIOS update. Follow any on-screen instructions.
Check for an External Display:
- If the fan is running but the screen is blank, try connecting an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C. Sometimes the update screen may display there instead of the internal screen.
Use HP Support Tools:
- If the above methods do not work, download the HP BIOS Recovery Tool on another computer, create a recovery USB, and use it to manually update the BIOS by booting from the USB.
Note:
Leaving the laptop in a hot car could have contributed to the issue, as overheating can affect both battery performance and internal components. Be sure to avoid exposing your laptop to high temperatures, and allow it time to cool down before use if it’s been in a hot environment.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
