I use an HP pavilion laptop and it was working fine except suddenly, when I started my laptop today, it asked me to select a language and then the windows recovery screen popped up after that. I’ve tried troubleshooting methods such as the startup repair method but I got a message that said “startup repair couldn’t repair your pc.” I’ve also tried uninstalling updates but those failed too, along with the system restore method or the system image recovery method. I’ve also tried command prompts such as chkdsk or bootrec but there were errors with those and did not work. What other methods can I try to get my laptop to work again?

Hi @lxilin,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion laptop is booting to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and you've already tried common troubleshooting methods like Startup Repair, uninstalling updates, system restore, and using command prompts with no success, there are a few additional steps you can take to try and resolve the issue:

1. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Disconnect Peripherals: Remove all external devices (USB drives, printers, external hard drives, etc.) and restart the laptop.
  • Inspect Internal Hardware: If you’re comfortable opening your laptop, check for loose connections or improperly seated components like RAM and storage drives. Ensure all internal cables are securely connected.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Power Down: Turn off the laptop and unplug it from the power source. Remove the battery if it’s removable.
  • Discharge Residual Power: Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect and Restart: Reinsert the battery (if removed), plug in the power adapter, and try to turn the laptop back on.

3. Use Advanced Options in WinRE

  • Access Safe Mode: From the WinRE screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, and then choose Restart. After your PC restarts, select 4) Enable Safe Mode or 5) Enable Safe Mode with Networking to see if you can boot into Safe Mode. This can sometimes help with troubleshooting and removing problematic software.
  • Check for Disk Errors: From the Command Prompt in WinRE, run chkdsk /f /r C: to check and repair disk errors. Replace C: with the appropriate drive letter if Windows is installed on a different drive.

4. Use Bootrec Commands

  • Rebuild Boot Configuration Data (BCD): Open Command Prompt from WinRE and run the following commands:These commands can help repair issues with the boot configuration.

5. Restore or Reset Windows

  • Reset This PC: If you can access the Troubleshoot menu in WinRE, try Reset this PC to reinstall Windows while keeping or removing your files. Choose the option that best suits your needs. This might require you to have a Windows installation media if the built-in recovery options are not working.
    • Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    • Select Keep my files or Remove everything depending on whether you want to keep your personal files.

6. Use Windows Installation Media

  • Create Installation Media: If you don’t have a recovery drive, you can create Windows installation media using another working PC:
  • Boot from Installation Media: Insert the installation media into your laptop and restart. Enter BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing Esc, F2, F10, or Del during startup) and set the boot order to boot from the USB or DVD.
  • Repair Your Computer: Once booted from the installation media, select Repair your computer from the setup screen to access WinRE and perform additional troubleshooting or reset options.

7. Check for Hardware Failures

  • Run Diagnostics: If your laptop supports it, run hardware diagnostics from the BIOS/UEFI menu to check for hardware failures.
    • Restart the laptop and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing Esc, F2, F10, or Del during startup).
    • Look for a diagnostic tool or hardware test option and run it to check for any hardware issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
