Hi,

I have newly bought hp laptop and prompted me to login with Microsoft. But once logged in, I have changed the language and restarted again. But on restarting it showing the Microsoft account needs parental consent and asked to create a parental login. On creating that one, the login is not at all possible. Now I'm in a situation of not able to use the laptop at all. Please help.

@sijujacob, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Hey! No worries — this is a known issue that can occur when a Microsoft account is mistakenly set up as a child account. Here’s how you can fix it and regain access to your new HP laptop.

When you set up your HP laptop and signed in with a Microsoft account, Windows may have linked your account to Microsoft Family Safety. If it thinks you're under 18 (based on the date of birth in your Microsoft account), it restricts access and asks for parental consent.

Solutions You Can Try

Option 1: Try a Hard Reboot First

  1. Hold the power button until the laptop completely shuts down.
  2. Turn it back on. If it gives you a login screen but still asks for parental consent, proceed to Option 2.

Option 2: Remove Child Account Restriction via Microsoft Family

  1. From a separate device (phone or PC), go to: 👉 https://account.microsoft.com/family
  2. Log in with the parental Microsoft account you created.
  3. You’ll see your (child) account listed there.
  4. Select the child account and click Remove from family group.
  5. Restart your HP laptop and try logging in again.

Option 3: Reset the PC and Create a Local Account

If nothing else works and you're still stuck:

  1. Force a reset by following these steps:
    • On the login screen, hold Shift and click Power > Restart.
    • Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    • Select Remove everything (if you're okay with wiping it).
  2. During setup, skip signing in to Microsoft and choose “Offline Account” or “Local Account” instead.

🛠️ Tips for Reinstall

  • When you’re back in, you can always add a Microsoft account later under Settings > Accounts.
  • Make sure your Microsoft account's birthdate is above 18 to avoid this issue in the future:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
