When I use my hp omen 17 laptop on battery it gives this error VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE nvlddmkm.sys Even though I deleted the display card drivers with DDU software and reinstalled them, there was no improvement. I just bought the laptop 3 days ago. Could it be a hardware failure? Should I return it?

Hi @Seyfullah18,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to assist you.
The VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (nvlddmkm.sys) error typically relates to GPU driver or hardware issues. Since you’ve already performed a clean driver installation using DDU, and the issue persists, here are additional troubleshooting steps:
1. Check Power Management Settings:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure you are using the "High Performance" or "Balanced" plan.
- In the NVIDIA Control Panel, under Manage 3D Settings > Power Management Mode, set it to Prefer Maximum Performance.
2. Test GPU on Battery:
- Use GPU benchmarking tools (e.g., FurMark, Unigine Heaven) to test GPU performance on battery. If the error recurs under stress, it could indicate a hardware issue.
3. Update BIOS:
- Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the BIOS.
Make sure you keep only the charger plugged in while updating the BIOS for your PC.
Click on the + sign next to BIOS and then download the file.
Open the file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
4. Check for Windows Updates:
- Install all the pending updates for the Windows operating system by following the below steps.
go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the upgrade is available for your device and you want to proceed, download and install it.
5. Hardware Diagnostics:
- Follow the steps below to perform an extensive system test to confirm if the hardware is working fine.
1) Shut down the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F2 once.
4) Go to the system test > extensive test
6. Reinstall windows:
- Please click on this link to perform a recovery on your Laptop. (Take a backup of the data before performing a recovery)
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
