Friend of mine accidently shut down his laptop while it was updating. Long story short, we have to do a new Windows install due to continues rebooting and "recovering". But i can't get the laptop to boot from an USB, can somebody give tips?

Hi,

You're welcome :generic:

Creating the installation media again is a good idea.

My usual setting in Rufus to install Windows 10 to a gpt drive is MBR for UEFI computers - FAT32.

Also, I'd definetely make sure to insert the installation flash drive when the machine is on and then power it off via the power button - hold it down for 15 seconds just to ensure the machine has powered down.

Tap away at the esc key as soon as you power on and then access the Boot Manager ( f9 ) from there.

Note:  If it still isn't working, enter the bios menu ( f10 ) and look for a setting that emulates usb 2.0 in the pre-OS environment.

Regards,

Hi,

Rather than changing the boot priority in the bios, see if you can start an installation from the boot manager menu as follows.

Power on the machine, insert the installation flash drive and Shutdown the notebook with the media still inserted, by holding down the power button for 10 seconds.

Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ).

Use the arrow keys to highlight the Flash drive option and hit enter.

GPT for UEFI - FAT32 didn't do the trick, the laptop said the efi device failed.

I am now trying MBR for UEFI - FAT32
