Hi @Lenard2

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP computer is not allowing you to access the Start Menu, which is a critical part of the Windows interface. This could be due to various issues, ranging from system glitches, corrupted files, or even hardware problems.

Here are several troubleshooting steps you can take to try and fix this issue:

1. Restart the Computer

If the problem is a temporary glitch, simply restarting the computer might resolve it.

  • Try restarting the computer by pressing and holding the power button for about 10 seconds until the system shuts off. Then, turn it back on to see if the Start Menu works properly.

2. Check for External Devices

Sometimes, external devices like USB drives, external monitors, or peripherals can interfere with Windows’ ability to function normally.

  • Unplug any external devices (USB drives, printers, external hard drives, etc.) and try restarting your computer to see if the issue persists.

3. Try Using the Keyboard Shortcut

If the Start Menu isn’t opening with a mouse click, you might be able to open it with a keyboard shortcut.

  • Press the Windows key on your keyboard (it’s the key with the Windows logo, usually between the "Alt" and "Fn" keys).
  • If this works, it might be a mouse issue or a problem with the taskbar.

4. Restart Windows Explorer

Sometimes, the Windows Explorer process, which controls the Start Menu, Taskbar, and other parts of the desktop, can become unresponsive.

Steps to restart Windows Explorer:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc or Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open Task Manager.
  2. In Task Manager, look for Windows Explorer under the Processes tab.
  3. Right-click on Windows Explorer and select Restart.
  4. This will refresh the Explorer process, and it may restore the functionality of your Start Menu.

5. Check for Windows Updates

Outdated or corrupted system files can sometimes prevent the Start Menu from functioning. Running Windows Update might fix this issue if it’s caused by a known bug.

Steps to run Windows Update:

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings (if you can access this).
  2. Go to Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
  4. Restart your computer to see if the issue is resolved.

6. Run the System File Checker (SFC)

Corrupted system files can cause problems with the Start Menu. You can run System File Checker (SFC) to repair these files.

Steps to run SFC:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click File in the top-left corner and select Run new task.
  3. Type cmd in the box, check Create this task with administrative privileges, and click OK.
  4. In the Command Prompt window, type:
  5. Press Enter and allow SFC to scan and repair any issues. This may take some time.

7. Use the Start Menu Troubleshooter (for Windows 10)

If you're using Windows 10, there’s a built-in troubleshooter that can attempt to automatically detect and fix issues with the Start Menu.

Steps to run the Start Menu troubleshooter:

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  3. Scroll down and select Additional troubleshooters.
  4. Select Start Menu under the "Find and fix other problems" section, and follow the prompts.

8. Create a New User Profile

If there’s an issue with your user profile, it could be affecting the Start Menu. Creating a new user account might fix the issue.

Steps to create a new user account:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Go to File > Run new task.
  3. Type ms-settingsand press Enter to open Accounts Settings.
  4. In the Family & other users section, click Add someone else to this PC.
  5. Follow the prompts to create a new account and log in to see if the Start Menu works on the new profile.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
