Hi @Jennypage
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Hi Jennypage! It sounds like you're stuck in Recovery Mode and entering the recovery key isn't helping, so you might be thinking about reinstalling Windows to get things working again. Let's walk through a few steps to help you out.
Option 1: Exit Recovery Mode (If Possible)
Sometimes, the system might just need a simple way to exit recovery mode:
- Restart your PC.
- Try selecting the option to exit recovery mode if it's available on the screen. Some systems allow you to choose Exit or Exit and Boot Normally from the options in the recovery menu.
Option 2: Use Advanced Startup Options
If you need to reinstall or reset Windows, and you’re stuck in recovery mode, here’s how to proceed:
Go to Advanced Startup (if you're not already there):
- If you're on the Recovery screen, select Troubleshoot.
- Then, choose Advanced options.
Choose a Reset Option:
- From Advanced options, you can try one of these options depending on your goal:
- System Restore: This lets you revert to a previous restore point if you have one.
- Startup Repair: This can fix issues that are preventing Windows from starting.
- Reset this PC: This option allows you to either keep your files or remove everything and reinstall Windows.
- If you're looking to reinstall Windows, you can choose Reset this PC and select Remove everything for a clean installation.
Option 3: Reinstall Windows from a USB Drive
If you're still stuck and prefer a fresh start with a clean reinstall of Windows, you can create a bootable USB drive and reinstall Windows manually. Here’s how to do it:
Create a Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation media:
- On another computer, go to the Microsoft Download Center and download the Windows Media Creation Tool.
- Run the tool and select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file).
- Follow the instructions to create a bootable USB drive with the Windows installer.
Boot from the USB Drive:
- Plug the USB drive into your laptop and restart it.
- Enter the BIOS or UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, Esc, or Del during startup).
- Set the USB drive as the first boot option.
- Save and exit the BIOS/UEFI, and the laptop should boot from the USB drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
