Hi @Simcat1302,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you are facing an issue with connecting an external drive to your Chromebook.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

Check the File System Format: Chromebooks have limited support for different file systems. They typically support FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. If your external SSD is formatted with a file system that isn't supported, it may not be recognized properly. You can check the file system format on another computer, and if needed, reformat the drive to a compatible format (keeping in mind that reformatting will erase all data on the drive).

Verify the Drive’s Capacity and Health: Make sure the SSD is functioning correctly and is properly connected. Sometimes, large drives may require additional power or a different type of connection. Try connecting the SSD to a different USB port or using a different cable if possible.

Check Chromebook Compatibility: Some Chromebooks might have limitations on the size of external drives they can recognize. Ensure that your Chromebook’s firmware and operating system are up to date. You might also want to check online forums or the manufacturer’s support page for compatibility information.

Use a Different Device: Test the SSD on another computer to see if it’s recognized correctly. This can help determine if the issue is with the SSD itself or the Chromebook.

Update Chromebook: Make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS. Sometimes updates include improved support for external devices.

Check for Errors: On a different computer, run a diagnostic check on the SSD to ensure it isn’t suffering from hardware issues.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!

Hi Irvin6, thank you for your  suggestions . I have tried them all and nothing seems to resolve this issue. I've tried it on two other computers with success. Both of them recognized the drive as a 16TB drive. I really don't know what to do. Chromebook has been a problem for me from the beginning, I miss my "Windows". Thank you for your time, it's very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
