@Sadiq2025, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
The “Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)” error usually means there is a communication failure between the USB drive and the system. Here’s a step-by-step troubleshooting guide to help fix this issue:
Test on Another Computer:
Plug the 2TB USB disk into another PC/laptop.
If it works, the problem is with your HP laptop.
If it doesn’t, the drive may be faulty.
Try a Different USB Port:
Use a USB 2.0 port if you were using a USB 3.0 port, or vice versa.
Use a Different USB Cable or Adapter (if applicable):
Especially important if this is an external HDD/SSD using a USB-to-SATA adapter.
Uninstall USB Device Drivers
Open Device Manager (Windows Key + X → Device Manager).
Scroll to Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Find the item labeled Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed).
Right-click → Uninstall Device.
Reboot your computer.
Disable USB Selective Suspend
Open Control Panel → Power Options → "Change plan settings" next to the selected plan.
Click on Change advanced power settings.
Expand USB Settings → USB selective suspend setting.
Set both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to "Disabled."
Click Apply → OK → Reboot.
Update BIOS/Chipset Drivers
Go to HP’s support site: Official HP® Drivers and Software Download | HP® Support
Enter your laptop’s model number.
Download and install:
Latest BIOS
Chipset/USB drivers
Reboot after installing.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.
