I have a hp Model 17-by0021dx lap top computer that I haven't used in a while.  I charged up the battery and turned it on. I get a picture on the screen but nothing else will show on the screen.  I tried using a flash drive and even a CD to play music, but nothing will work.  It only show the picture on the screen.

Can someone tell me what the problem might be? Thank you

Hi @srjmn,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand your HP 17-by0021dx laptop powers on and shows an image on the screen, but Windows does not load and nothing else works. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm what the screen is showing
Check if the image is just the HP logo, a background picture, or a blank screen with a cursor.
This helps determine whether Windows is loading or stopping early.

Perform a hard reset
Turn off the laptop and unplug the charger.
Hold the power button for 15 seconds, then reconnect the charger and turn it on.

Check if Windows responds at all
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on the keyboard.
If a menu appears, Windows is loading but may be stuck in the background.

Try starting in Safe Mode
Turn the laptop on and interrupt startup by holding the power button when the HP logo appears, repeat this 2–3 times.
If recovery options appear, select Advanced options and try Safe Mode.

Run a hardware diagnostic test
Turn the laptop off, then turn it on and repeatedly press the Esc key.
Choose System Diagnostics and run the memory and hard drive tests.

Check the hard drive status
If diagnostics show a hard drive error, Windows cannot load properly.
A failing or disconnected drive will cause the system to show only a static screen.

Test external devices separately
USB drives or CDs will not play if Windows is not fully loaded.
This confirms the issue is with the operating system, not the accessories.

Consider Windows repair or recovery
If hardware tests pass but Windows will not load, the operating system may be corrupted.
Using recovery options to repair or reset Windows often resolves this.

I hope this helps.
