New laptop, no idea how to set it up before (?) I unplug the old one. Need to "transfer" some I go to new one. HELP!

To transfer personal data files, you have to plug in a USB stick on the old laptop, copy the files to it, plug it into the new laptop, and copy the files there

 

To transfer settings or apps, you have to use special software -- and what I have used that works best is EaseUS ToDo PC Trans.  The Pro version transfers apps but you have to buy it.
