Hi
The age of the PC maybe a factor?
A lite Linux, even 32 bit?

Some guides....

First:- Turn off the computer, press and hold the PWR button for 4 seconds.
Then - Leave only keyboard and mouse connected, disconnect all externally connected
devices such as Docking Station, USB storage devices, displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
Next - Press and Hold the Power button for 15 seconds to Hard Reset.
Rinse and Repeat; Re-Connect the AC adapter.
NOW begin checking/testing/proving the Hardware is fit for purpose.
Power on your PC, press ESC (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).

OH!
I have had that myself, especially SuSE 11.
It is a video problem and you want to try with acpi disabled etc at the boot screen.
Something like this... https://askubuntu.com/questions/160036/how-do-i-disable-acpi-when-booting
or
Video Mode
Select various graphical display modes for the installation. By Default the video resolution is automatically determined using KMS (“Kernel Mode Setting”). If this setting does not work on your system, choose No KMS and, optionally, specify vga=ask on the boot command line to get prompted for the video resolution.
Choose Text Mode if the graphical installation causes problems.
