This is my first laptop, and I'm lacking in knowledge.

I know 16gb is max ram for the laptop, but it is mean that 16gb for 2 slot combined, or can I put 16gb in both slot? My current ram is 8gb on one slot.

And for SSD, I getting confused when I'm searching online for SSD upgrade. Can SSD be used outside of the laptop? And is the meaning of 2.5 or 3.0 SSD?
