hp g42-415dx
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I cannot get past the windows boot menu. After going through the BIOS system and rebooting drivers as well as checking the memory and the hard drive, I cannot seem to start the system recovery. Windows does not boot, I just end up with a black screen and a dash in the upper left hand corner. F11 yields the same screen. I attempted to download a recovery disk from Windows but after entering my product key I was given an error message (The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options). The hp site does not offer a recovery option for download.  Help me reboot and either restore to a previous condition or reformat. This process is incredibly frustrating.  I would really like to be able to use this computer.
