OK I went ahead and ordered a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD for not much more than the HDD and cancelled the HDD order. I'll switch out the 16G SSD.
I hope the HP recovery media has no issue installing on the M.2 SSD. It's not giving any options now before throwing the Error, Get failure from Dynamic Recovery Tool. Presumably the error is due to the existing SSD not being big enough and not finding any other drive to install on. I really don't want to use the MS installer and have to manually install everything.

Hi Try_again.
As you might have guessed we're in completely different timezones, I know it's kind of a bummer. To be honest, if you don't hook up the drive to another working system (as I've already mentioned) your're really grasping at straws trying to solve the riddle.... Anyways, I wouldn't actually call Intel Optane an SSD, I would call it a relic from the past. These things provided a sort of quick (small) cache for HDDs, and also they're very problematic. When ultrafast NVME SSDs hit the market, they kind of became obsolete. BTW, what KIND of m.2 did you order? Hopefully a fast NVME. You didn't have to get such a large capacity one, for a boot drive you need sth>128gb and you're good to go. You can also get a cheap hdd afterwards for plain storage (movies, large files, backups and stuff).

I'm betting it will work out fine. However, there have been some unluckies where the recovery media just completely fails, it falls flat on its face, HP hasn't uploaded the right files, stuff like that. Don't be afraid of clean installing. It's actually the BEST. No useless programs, you can tweak it anyway you like, plus you learn a lot about your system. Not to mention starting with win10 and upwards, M$ has really made their OSs for "dummies".
Anyways, you seem to be in the right track to fixing this, post back if you get in a pickle 🙂

I ordered a fast WD Blue SSD and cost wasn't bad, not much more than the 2TB HDD. I expect it will be enough capacity by itself but the 2.5 IN slot will be available if needed. I also ordered an external enclosure to checkout the old HDD just to see if anything is alive. Don't know the probability of an issue with the 2.5 IN slot itself on the motherboard.

Well, the HDD isn't being seen by the BIOS/DISKPART. It's only the non-SSD Optane that the BIOS sees. So logic has it that either the HDD is bad or the SATA to the HDD is bad. I've not tried another known working HDD so can't rule out the possibility of a problem with the SATA in the 2.5 IN bay.
I ordered a SA510 SATA SSD.

- I ordered a SA510 SATA SSD.
Hence the price. OK but I did warn you 99% SATA m.2s would be OK. In the youtube video the guy used a sata m.2, however HP started phasing out SATA m.2 support and left only nvme m.2s -and there is no manual to make sure. Anyway, I'm sure it's fine.

10/10 in DDx! I hadn't thought of that possibility at all to be honest. Possible, but not probable though. If you had been messing with the laptop's innards.....maybe. Anways, have a good weekend.

I pulled the HDD, installed the SN570 SSD, and installed the OS using the HP system recovery USB flash drive with no issues. So it would appear that the [startnet] Error, Get failure from Dynamic Recovery Tool I had been getting was either due to the presumably bad HDD or the insufficient space for OS installation on the Optane drive, Either way it probably came down to insufficient space for installation.
Haven't received the external drive bay yet in order to run further tests on the HDD.
Now that the repaired laptop will probably run at lightning speeds I'm wondering if I should add a SN570 SSD to my HP 15-da0076nr for the OS which currently only has a 1TB HDD. Not sure if there may also be an Optane installed or not but I'm not seeing it from DISKPART which had shown the Optane on the 15-da3019cy. Surprisingly the user guide and Maintenance & Service manuals are the same for both models and it looks like there should be a M.2 2280 NVMe slot in the 15-da0076nr. Really don't want to re-image the entire OS and all the other software installed though. I thought II had seen some utility software that would transfer the OS image from an HDD to an SDD without having to re-install but now that I'm looking for it I'm not finding it.

Yes, as I told you above it's the same manual and it's for the older models. If you take a look at page 1 of the manual it says:
HP 15 Laptop PC Model numbers: 15-da1000~15-da1999 and 15-da0000~15-da0999. So it's not for 15-da3019cy but it is for your 15-da0076nr. The one you upgraded is totally different inside from the other one. I took a sneak peak last time of the storage section and it looks like you have to take out the hdd to install an m.2 (it definitely has one). I'll try to find a review or youtube of upgrading and post back.
Concerning cloning, everyone here suggests the Macrium freebie, who am I to argue 😁

Which manual are you looking at? I'm looking at the HP 15 Laptop PC Maintenance and Service Guide filename c06691790 and shows Document Part Number: L19674-002. Page 45 shows the location of the HDD on the right side of the chassis and page 48 shows the M.2 SSD location in the left side, This matches exactly how the drives are located in my 15-da3019cy. So if this is correct for 15-da0076nr then installing an M.2 SSD along with the HDD should be possible.
Page 50 has an important note "The Optane memory module is installed into the M.2 connector that is used by M.2 solid-state drives. You cannot install both an Optane memory module and a solid-state drive in the computer." Very true.
Running the Optane Memory Management Tool it shows Your System is not Optane Memory Ready with No supported controller found. So it would seem no Optane in this laptop. Which should make it that much easier to install an SSD if I decide to. Providing the SSD connector board is there.
