Hi @coolwater1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

If your HP 17.3-inch laptop is acting erratically with pop-ups and overlays after a reset, it may be due to software issues, potential malware, or incorrect settings. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Update Windows:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click on Check for updates and install any available updates.

Update Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website and search for your laptop model.
  • Download and install the latest drivers for your device, including chipset, graphics, and other essential drivers.

Run a Malware Scan:

  • Open Windows Security by searching for it in the Start menu.
  • Go to Virus & threat protection.
  • Click Quick scan to check for any immediate threats.
  • For a more thorough check, run a Full scan.

Check Installed Programs:

  • Go to Settings > Apps.
  • Look through the list of installed programs for any that seem unfamiliar or suspicious.
  • Uninstall any programs that you do not recognize or did not intentionally install.

Perform a Clean Boot:

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  • Go to the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  • Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
  • Disable all startup items.
  • Restart your computer and see if the issue persists. If it does not, enable services and startup items one by one to identify the cause.

Reset Your Browser Settings:

  • If pop-ups and overlays are mostly appearing while using a web browser, reset the browser settings to default.
  • In Chrome, go to Settings > Advanced > Reset and clean up.
  • In Firefox, go to Help > Troubleshooting Information > Refresh Firefox.
  • In Edge, go to Settings > Reset settings.

Check for Windows Corruption:

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator by searching cmd in the Start menu, right-clicking it, and selecting Run as administrator.
  • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. This will check for and repair any corrupted system files.

Reinstall Windows:

  • If none of the above steps work, consider performing a clean installation of Windows.
  • Backup your important data.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  • Select Reset this PC and choose Remove everything for a clean install.

If you continue to experience issues after trying these steps, there may be a deeper hardware issue.

Contacting HP Phone Support for further help would be advisable.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
