I've been using this laptop with its original battery for many years now...thought I'd check the battery using System Diagnotics>Battery Test at boot up.  Test result says "Battery Good".  For kicks, tried again because I knew battery life was far less than when new.  2nd test result says "Replace Battery".  3rd test result confirms 2nd test.  Immediately ordered new battery.  In the meantime, when operating laptop on battery power, battery icon showns "Plugged in, Charging" when not plugged in.  Ususally happens between 30-40% battery power remaining.  When it happens, screen brightens and other "plugged in" characteristics take over, so laptop truly believes it is plugged in.  Battery is eaten up quickly at this point, gives no notice when its about to shut off, shuts off without saving anything that's open, and repeatedly tries to restart 8-10 times until battery is completely dead (quick on/off cycles).  I can plug it in and everything resumes as normal.  Will recharge to 100%, but will do the same thing all over again when battery level drops to 30-40% again.

Others have posted in the HP Support Forum this similar problem:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/plugged-not-charging-but-it-s-n...

and in a Windows Support Forum:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/8a74c53b-406f-4ce6-a1ae-da1dd11b8d1a/windo...

I've followed the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver uninstall/reinstall directions, nothing changed.  I've disconnected the battery, waited, pressed power button to discharge any remaining power, reinstalled the battery, and restarted...still no changes.  I followed the detailed installation/charging instructions that came with the new battery...no changes.  The new battery life has been diminished greatly, too, since its first install.

I am convinced that this problem stems from running the Battery Test in System Diagnostics because the problem didn't appear until minutes after running this program.  Called HP Tech, but since out of warranty, they wouldn't help unless I purchased "HP Care SmartFriend" service.  Told me techs would fix immediately as it is probably a driver issue. So, I purchased.  Techs checked my computer for malware and claims to have fixed "several virus infections", although I saw the reports that were generated by the software downloaded by him...all were clean.  They now tell me it must be a hardware problem because they can't remotely fix this problem.  So, I wasted money and time.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Envy notebook. I understand that battery drains when computer is turned off and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,

Let's start with updating the BIOS and the Chipset drivers to the latest version using the Official HP website for drivers and downloads: Click here to find it.

Run a battery test using F2 (during restart), if the test failed:

Check with an alternate battery.

If the test passes and yet, the issue persists:

Within BIOS there's an option that provides energy to the Type-C USB port even when the notebook is turned off.

Hence, I recommend you disable this feature to fix the battery drain.

Please find the details listed below:

  • Press the power button and then tap the F2 key to invoke the start-up menu.
  • Choose and click on the F10 key to invoke the BIOS.
  • Use the System Configuration tab. Disable USB Charging  and press the F10 key to save the changes and boot into Windows.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers.

Hi, SandyTechy20.

You're not addressing my problem...maybe someone else's in error.

1) I have a laptop that thinks it is plugged in when it is not.

2) My laptop battery doesn't drain when turned off.

3) Running the battery test (F2 during startup) is what I believed caused the problem as this problem appeared immediately after running the test.

4) I have installed the latest BIOS.

5) I purchased a new battery and this problem was ruining it, so I put the original battery back in the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Thanks for the reply.

I understand the issue better now.

Please follow the below steps to fix this issue.

Uninstall the battery drivers and reinstall by restarting the Notebook. Click here to know the steps.

Calibrate the battery. Click here and follow the document for calibration.

Let me know if that works.

Cheers.

Hi, SandyTechy20.

Regarding battery drivers, I am able to uninstall the "Microsoft ACPI-Client Control Method Battery " only.  I cannot do anything with the actual battery driver "Microsoft Composite Battery" except to update, which there is none available.  I followed instructions on how to reset my particular laptop - While off, press the power and Beats button simultaneously for 8 -10 seconds.  Done.

Now, as you can tell from my original post, I believe the Battery Test under HP Diagnostics is what caused my problem, but I ran it anyways.  Battery is good, doesn't request me to calibrate (I guess because it has been done before?).  From a full charge, I used the computer until it shut off like it should...I received warning notices that the battery level was getting low - Twice. Great.  As I said, it shut off like it should, saved my work, things looked great.  Plugged it in and charged it overnight to 100%.  Started using it for the second time after the reset.  All was fine until about 15 minutes of use, then my screen got brighter (hinting to me that it thinks it is plugged in).  Looked at battery icon and it shows a plug beside it.  Hovered the mouse over the battery icon and it reads "83% available (plugged in, charging)", which is not the case.

Why would my laptop believe that it is plugged in after running the HP Diagnostics' Battery Test?  After almost 5 years of absolutely no problems, why now after running this Battery Test program for the very first time? It's not a coincidence.

As I'm not the only person who has had this problem, how was it resolved?

Thank you, again.
