Hi

I managed to cook my HP14S-DQ2512SA and unfortunately melted the part with the serial number on it.

The memory drive is intact but is locked with bitlocker ( which i didnt know anything about)

I can see some other product numbers on the inside, including Build ID .

It was purchased from Currys /PC World in March 2023

Can the serial number be found from that ?

Is it possible to access the Bit Locker number once the lap top is recognised?

HELP PLEASE

Hi @SweepyChap,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m really sorry to hear about the damage to your HP 14s-dq2512sa. I’ll guide you carefully through what’s possible in this situation.

1. Recovering the Serial Number (SN)

If the printed label on the base has melted, there are still a few ways the serial number might be recovered:

a) From the original retail receipt/invoice (Currys PC World)

Currys normally records the HP product number (P/N) and sometimes the serial number in their internal system.
If you purchased it in March 2023, they may still be able to retrieve:

  • Serial Number
  • Proof of purchase
  • Extended warranty details (if any)

→ Please contact Currys support or visit a store with your receipt/payment details.
They can look up the device record tied to the transaction.

b) From the HP system board

On many HP 14s models, the serial number is also printed on a small white label on the system board itself.
If the board is not heat-damaged and the label is intact, an HP technician can read it during service.

c) If the device still powers on

If the machine still works at a hardware level, the SN can often be found in:

  • BIOS/UEFI → System Information (F10 at power-on)
  • HP Hardware Diagnostics → System Info (F2 at power-on)

If the unit is too damaged to boot, this step won’t be possible.

2. About BitLocker & Data Access

BitLocker is a Windows encryption feature. Once it is enabled, even automatically, it cannot be bypassed without the recovery key.

How to get the BitLocker recovery key

If the laptop is ever logged into a Microsoft account, the key is usually saved automatically.

Ask the customer to sign in here:
HP PCs - Using BitLocker and finding the recovery key (Windows 11, 10) | HP® Support

If the key is stored, it will appear along with the last-known device information.

Important

HP cannot retrieve or reset a BitLocker recovery key for security reasons; it is never stored by HP

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
