I have a HP Envy laptop. I keep getting an improper shutdown message. My computer shuts off when there is a period of inactivity.  Also, I'm not super computer savvy and my husband looked at my BIOS and it said it didn't need updating. I have done all the normal troubleshooting fixes that I've read about on the internet and it's not fixed. Not sure what else to do. Thanks for your help.

Hi @Woolylambo,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue with improper shutdowns and inactivity on your HP Envy laptop could be related to power settings, hardware issues, or system glitches. Here's a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue.

Check Power Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Select Change plan settings next to your active power plan.
  • Adjust the Turn off the display and Put the computer to sleep settings to a longer time or "Never."
  • Click on Change advanced power settings:
    • Expand Sleep > Allow hybrid sleep and set it to Off.
    • Expand Hibernate after and set it to Never.
    • Save the changes and restart your laptop.

Disable Fast Startup

  • Press Windows + S, type Control Panel, and open it.
  • Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) and save changes.

Run System Maintenance

  • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  • Type msdt.exe -id MaintenanceDiagnostic and press Enter.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to troubleshoot and fix potential system issues.

Update Drivers

Even if your BIOS doesn’t need updating, other drivers might:

  • Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
  • Check for updates on critical devices such as:
    • Display adapters
    • Network adapters
    • System devices
  • Right-click each device and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.

Check for System File Corruption

  • Press Windows + S, type cmd, right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
  • Type the following commands one at a time:
    1. sfc /scannow
    2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Restart your laptop after these commands.

Test Hardware Components

  • Battery and Charger: Make sure the battery is healthy. If the laptop is under warranty, reach out to HP support for a battery diagnostic.
  • Run HP Diagnostics:
    • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to open HP Diagnostics.
    • Run the System Test or Component Test (specifically for power and memory).

Adjust BIOS Power Settings

Even though the BIOS doesn’t need updating, check its settings:

  • Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter the BIOS setup.
  • Look for Power Management or similar settings.
  • Disable any features related to automatic shutdown, such as "Deep Sleep."

Reset Power Configuration

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  • Run: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
  • Restart your laptop and check if the issue persists.

Consider Hardware Issues

If the problem persists, it could indicate:

  • A faulty power supply or battery.
  • An overheating issue (clean vents and ensure proper airflow).
  • A failing internal component.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,

Thank you for taking your time and energy to help me. I think maybe your suggestion about setting the hybrid sleep to off did the trick.  So far, so good at least. This is the first I have heard about hybrid sleep. Again, thank you so much for your help!

Don't have a "Kudos/Thumbs Up" on the bottom right. If I did, I would definitely click it!  Thanks again!
