Wireless module (701)

Hi @IR20,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that your HP G71 is showing a “Wireless Module (701)” error and the Wi-Fi button will not turn on.

What the Wireless Module (701) error means

This is different from a normal Wi-Fi driver problem. HP identifies the 701/70x wireless module error as an indication that the system has detected a wireless module that is not supported or is not being recognized correctly, so the wireless function may be disabled.

What to check

  1. Shut down the notebook completely.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery if it is removable.
  3. Power the notebook back on and check whether the Wireless Module (701) message appears again.
  4. If Windows starts, open Device Manager > Network adapters and check whether the wireless adapter is listed. If it is listed, open Properties and check the device status and hardware IDs. HP recommends using Device Manager to identify the installed WLAN card.

If the 701 error appears every time the notebook starts, the wireless card may need to be reseated or replaced with a module supported by the notebook. Avoid installing a random replacement wireless card, as HP systems can have model-specific wireless-module compatibility requirements.

Please provide the full HP G71 model number/product number shown on the service label, along with a photo of the Wireless Module (701) message. With that information, we can determine the appropriate wireless card and next step.

Best regards,
