Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,

I am attempting to install Windows 10 on a HP Compaq 6710b (old I know- for a relation) that is currently running Windows 7 Home Premium (OEM).

BIOS F14 . Cannot see a BIOS update on HP site.

1800 MHZ with 3 GB of RAM and 50GB of free hard drive space.

Intel core TM2 Duo, CPU T 7100

Have updated the Win7 operating system. Had not been used since 2009.

Trying to boot Win10 from USB can only get to a screen showing the blue 4 windows sign. Have waited for 30 minutes or so and no change. Looks to be stuck. Maybe I need to wait longer?

Can this device be updated to Win10?

I am also hoping I can use the current activation code?

Does anyone have experience with this and/or any suggestions.

I have only very basic computer skills.

Thanks for any help.

Regards

Hello @MC09

This is really an old device and I cannot guarantee 100% it will be upgraded successfully to W10. You should definitely try.

However, you are doing it wrong. In order to upgrade the easy way and to avoid many of the common issue

and

in order to get the free upgrade offer (keep and extend the W7 license to W10 one), you should use the Windows 10 upgrade tool from here >> https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10

Download and run this media creation tool and choose the option to UPGRADE THIS PC NOW

Before you start the upgrade, make sure you do uninstall any OLD software you may have on this PC such as old antivirus or security apps and any known old apps

Here are details >> https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks very much. You have saved me a lot of time and the world still has a functioning laptop.

Accepted existing Win7 Pro validation code and updated with a new one.

Installed final update.

For others

Bios configuration for HP Protect Tools needs to be uninstalled before you uninstall HP Protect Tools Security Manager.

Final Windows prep will take a good while, but if HDD is running just wait. It's a dinosaur.

Once again, thanks.

First, you need to find out the minimum hardware requirement of the system to install Windows 10 on it.

If the HP Compaq 6710b satisfies the minimum requirements then and then only, I'd advise you to install Windows 10 on it.
